What is a good relationship with God?
Hi, how are you? I hope you have been well.
I’ve been so-so, a bit unwell, and on bed-rest at some point. I’m slowly recovering and hope to get well soon. That’s why I haven’t been able to write in here for a while.
Some thoughts have been going through my mind during my rest period. E.g. what is a good relationship with God? What is true fulfillment in life? What are we really living for? Because at the end of the day, when all the hustle and bustle is said and done, we shall have only one question left to answer. Did I live a fulfilling life that pleased God?
So as I thought about it, I discovered that for me a good relationship is not the rigorous observance of going to church, being involved in as many ministry teams as possible, shouting down at people or forcing the gospel down people’s throats in the name of evangelism – all in a bid to tick away at some scoreboard.
For me, I’d call it a gut feeling. The one that tells you not to board a certain matatu (public service vehicle e.g. a bus), and if you obey, you find it stalled ahead in a break down, and discover that God saved you from an accident or a delay. Or the one that tells you to avoid a certain route. Or the one that told me to avoid buying things on the street the day I was arrested because of wanting to buy a PK (Orbit chewing gum) from a street hawker.
Now that for me, is a good relationship with god. An ever present guiding spirit of help, communion, fellowship, conversation, filling the lonely void in my heart and leading me in the paths where life is flowing.
Just for note’s sake, I haven’t bought another PK from the streets. I buy them in packs from the supermarket. And always will. And will now listen to the little nudging voice in my heart on what to do each moment. A good relationship with God – the ever present Still, Small Voice.
