If you know me, you know I like having my nails always on point. So recently, I haven’t really attended to my toe nails, and I made a remark about it as my daughter and I were hanging out. She told me that they didn’t look that bad (true?), but then went on to say how hers aren’t this or that… And immediately, something popped up in my heart and mind.
And I said, “Baby girl, thank you very much, but let me teach you something right now. You don’t have to put yourself down to make someone else feel better. You don’t have to say something bad about yourself to encourage me or anyone else.”
I don’t know who needs to hear that, but child, you don’t have to put yourself down or say disparaging things about yourself to make the lights of others shine. They can shine and so can you. It’s not a crime, child! And you are worth the sparkle!!!
So whoever taught us to elevate others by diminishing ourselves taught us wrong. So I come with a new gospel… As you love others, love yourself. You don’t have to extinguish yourself and your goodness for you to encourage others. And if you are in an environment where that’s expected of you, this might be yours. You need new company.
The Bible says we are salt and light. Not that some of us are supposed to be candle stands or bulb holders. Shine on, child, you are AMAZING!!!
